The key to any exam is strategy and preparation. A good private teacher can be extremely beneficial. However, to gain a level 6 or 7 in the academic test, preparation outside the classroom is vitally important.

In my view, reading articles and current news related to IELTS topics regularly will aid you immensely in reaching your target. What are the advantages? Well, you will expand your vocabulary for each topic and learn common phrases. You will gain a deeper understanding of the concepts and arguments which will serve you in the task 2 writing section, and give you ideas to discuss in the part 3 speaking section. Most importantly, you will improve your reading skills for the notoriously complex reading section.

I recommend several websites such as BreakingnewsEnglish and the BBC news website where you can find manageable articles on all of the topics along with videos to watch and listen to. For more complex material head to the Economist or New Statesman online magazines.

It goes without saying that lessons alone will only get you so far.
